Camping in Comfort, oh yes...
Some very camp thoughts. The very thought of camping fills many people with dread. Memories of; drafty, leaky, cotton tents, having to slack off guy ropes when it rained in the night, thin cold sleeping bags, burnt porridge, leaky paraffin stoves that you had to pre-heat with meths and which weighed as much as 3 men and a dog, have made many hard men into whimpering wrecks at the very thought.
Don’t even think about it Let me say now, dispel those memories from your mind. Modern camping gear is cheap, light, reliable, waterproof and warm.
”Something for the weekend, Sir?” I have attached my bike Camping List which really is exactly what I take with me. It is a good basic guide to what you need for a weekend. Of course, some guys just take a sleeping bag and tent, hard men indeed, I bet they are motorbike couriers! If you are in a car, obviously, you can take more. I always use the list as a checklist to make sure that I haven’t forgotten anything.
The stuff in italics on the checklist I don’t always take depending on where I go and what I am doing.
I shall add my comments on the items (not all of them as you are not stupid….) as my preference and with my suggestions. Remember that unlike a backpacker, weight is not your problem (to a great extent on a bike), but space is, so worry about size, not weight. When bike camping “size IS everything. Size matters!”
